WordPress Website Design

The platform trusted by some of the biggest names in the world — and just as brilliant for your small business, giving you complete control to update every page yourself.

WordPress is one of the best content management systems (CMS) in the world, with some of the largest companies — such as Bloomberg, the White House and Walt Disney — utilising this easy-to-use website platform. The beauty of WordPress is that every single page can be updated by just about anyone, with easy-to-use widgets to help you publish those changes. They can be as big or as small as you want them to be.

A (very) brief history of WordPress

WordPress began life in 2003, when Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little forked a piece of blogging software called b2/cafelog to create something simpler and more open. Over the following two decades it grew from a blogging tool into a fully-fledged CMS capable of running anything from a personal blog to a global news outlet or an online shop. It's released under an open-source (GPL) licence, which is part of why it's stayed free to use and endlessly extendable — anyone can build a plugin or theme for it, and a huge global community does exactly that.

Just how popular is WordPress, really?

Depending on which measurement method you use, WordPress currently powers somewhere between roughly a third and just over 40% of all websites on the internet — around 33% according to HTTP Archive's crawl data, or around 43% by W3Techs' methodology. Either way, among websites that are built on an identifiable content management system, WordPress accounts for roughly 60–64% of them — more than every other CMS combined. That scale matters for you as a small business owner: it means an enormous ecosystem of developers, plugins, themes and free help, and a platform that isn't going anywhere.

Why we build on WordPress

  • You own it. Unlike some closed website builders, your WordPress site and its content genuinely belong to you — no annual "platform tax" to keep your own website online.
  • It scales with you. Start with a simple brochure site and add a blog, an online shop (via WooCommerce) or booking system later without starting again from scratch.
  • Strong SEO foundations. Clean, semantic code and a huge choice of trusted SEO plugins make it straightforward to build a site search engines (and AI answer engines) can understand.
  • Easy for you to manage. Once we've built it, updating text, images and blog posts yourself is genuinely simple — no code required.

Don't need our help? There's a whole world of free tutorials

WordPress's popularity means there's a huge amount of free, high-quality video training if you'd rather learn to manage or even build parts of your own site. YouTube channels like Web Squadron and other dedicated WordPress educators publish detailed, continuously-updated tutorials covering everything from installing your first theme to building complex layouts — genuinely excellent (and free) resources if you're the DIY type. Of course, if you'd rather leave it to us, that's exactly what we're here for.

A little insider secret: a website is very much like printing — if you don't promote it, it won't be seen. Share it on your social networks, get your family to send it to their friends, and update it regularly so Google and Bing don't think the content's gone stale. The more you put in, the more it works for you.
